- Abstract
Chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) is the most prevalent of the world's blood-borne viral infections. It may lead to liver cirrhosis, end-stage liver disease or hepatocellular carcinoma. HBV is spread via percutaneous and permucosal exposure to infected body fluids. The small numbers of people in the UK who contract acute HBV infection are usually infected in adulthood via unprotected sex or injected drug use using contaminated equipment. Kate Jack, Joanne Cooper and Stephen Ryder discuss HBV infection in terms of definitions, risk factors, blood testing and immune system responses to infection and vaccination.
