- Authors
Bleeke, Marian
- Abstract
The article discusses women's artistic agency, focusing on medieval German nun and Christian saint Hildegard of Bingen and on photographer Francesca Woodman. The author considers medieval gender constructions, Hildegard's divine inspiration, and the Rupertsberg manuscript of Hildegard's work known as the "Scivias." She also examines notions of Woodman as an empowered female and comments on her suicide. Feminist scholarship by Madeline Caviness is discussed. Photographs of various works are presented, including "Self-portrait" and "House #4" by Woodman and "The Tower of the Church" by Hildegard.
