- Abstract
This essay examines the representation of personality, mental life and emotional expression in the history of British fiction since the mid-18th century based on the psychological theory. Topics discussed are interrelations between self and society and the polarities of conflict that motivate and shape character, the untrustworthy narrator and their modes of storytelling, and role of imaginative literature in the expression of social values and intellectual self-consciousness or inner life.
