- Title
NONVIOLENT ALTERNATIVES AMONG THE ENGA OF THE PAPUA NEW GUINEA HIGHLANDS.
- Authors
Young, Douglas W.
- Abstract
The article discusses the nonviolent methods adopted to resolve tribal fighting among the Engans in the Highlands of Papua New Guinea. Tribal fighting is a major social problem of the people there. The traditional nonviolent means of conflict resolution include avoidance of enemies and enemy territory, social shaming of potential troublemakers, migration to other areas and encouraging traditional religious values. State-sponsored means of conflict resolution include granting the police special powers of arrest and the establishment of village courts that provide for intervention and resolution along traditional lines.
