- Abstract
The article focuses on a study that examined the adverse effects of consuming dietary supplements containing large amounts of vitamin A during the early phase of pregnancy. The study, which was conducted by researcher K.J. Rothman and colleagues, was published in the "New England Journal of Medicine." More than 22,000 women were involved in the study and it was found that infants whose mothers took more than 15,000 international units (IU) of vitamin A were more prone to birth defects than those whose mothers took less quantity of vitamin A. It was found that birth defects were twice more commonly seen in those infants whose mothers took more than 10,000 IU of vitamin A than those whose mothers took not more than 5,000 IU.
