- Title
TV Documentary and Ideology.
- Authors
Garnham, Nicholas
- Abstract
The article explores the use of naturalism in television documentaries. In this mode, the act of communication is seen as passive, and its tools, like the camera, is viewed as neutral. Naturalism highlights the recording function of film or television, instead of its function to manipulate or create illusion. The author argues that television documentary directors can develop epic forms of television by freeing themselves from the common documentary style, and adapting the naturalistic style. But to achieve this, filmmakers must challenge the ideology in which the present system of documentary making is based.
