- Abstract
The chemical tanker ship Jo Elk was berthed at Teesport n the UK and a ship-to-ship transfer of crude sulphate turpentine (CST) from this tanker to another one had just been completed. During the subsequent cargo tank washing out procedure, an Able Bodied Seaman (AB) and the Chief Officer were overcome by fumes containing dihydrogen sulphide (H2S) and methyl mercaptan (CH3SH). Fortunately, they were rescued by other shipmates and made a full recovery. It transpired that they had entered an unidentified enclosed (confined) space without respiratory equipment. The incident was investigated by the UK Marine Accident Investigation Branch on whose report this article is based.
