- Authors
Butler, Declan
- Abstract
The article reports on how China's economy has soared forward to the extent of overtaking other leading nations in a particular industry. It notes that since the 1978 open door policy of former leader Deng Xiaoping, the country has been experiencing a consistent economic growth of about 10% annually and thus making it catch up with the growth of Japan, Great Britain and France and ranking fourth in the world's most high gross domestic product (GDP) increase in 2006. The Chinese government is also making some effort to boost research and innovation by supporting Chinese students to take up science and engineering degrees.
