- Abstract
This qualitative study deals with an internship workshop for kindergarten teachers participating in a model "urban incubator" specialization-training program that is in its initial phase, in a city in central of Israel. The study attempts to examine the teachers' perceptions of the program. The program's purpose was to form a network of kindergarten teachers who resided in and related to the city where the workshop took place, and therefore its goals and procedures aimed both to establish regular contact with the municipal authorities and the supervisory system, and to present the city and its uniqueness to the participants. The research questions were: How do participants perceive the incubator? What are the advantages of the incubator and what are its disadvantages? To what extent did participation affect the internship? The study involved eighteen kindergarten teachers, a workshop facilitator, and a supervisor from the city. The research tools consisted of a semi-structured interview for the group facilitator, the supervisor and the six interns who volunteered for it, as well as a group interview and personal questionnaire with open-ended questions. The findings were analyzed using data-driven content analysis, based on the content that emerged using the research tools. The findings indicate that the participants perceived the incubator as having contributed in three dimensions: i. their professional development with respect to various aspects and in the urban context; ii. their personal development; and iii. the quality of the partnership between the college where they studied and their work in the field. These three dimensions express the uniqueness of the "urban incubator" and its benefits pertain to all incubator partners. Therefore, such a model can help to optimally absorb interns, reducing both participants' attrition from the profession and their leaving their cities of residence.
