- Abstract
This document is a summary of an article that examines the impact of administering equine tetanus antitoxin on the mortality rates of dogs with tetanus. The study reviewed three retrospective case-control studies and found no difference in survival to discharge between dogs treated with the antitoxin and those not treated. The current literature suggests that the use of equine tetanus antitoxin in dogs affected by tetanus has no significant effect on mortality rates, although the evidence is considered weak. The authors recommend considering individual clinical expertise, patient circumstances, and available resources when applying this evidence in practice. The studies had limitations such as small sample sizes, non-standardized treatment protocols, and potential confounding factors. The authors suggest that future large, randomized, prospective studies are needed to determine the optimal timing and dosing of antitoxin administration in dogs with tetanus.
