- Abstract
Elections allow people in a democratic society to choose their representatives. Thus, they provide the citizens the opportunity to express confidence or displeasure on these representatives through the ballot. Therefore, voting behavior is the positive or negative response of the electorate in the exercise of their democratic right to vote during a particular election. This article examined the factors that influenced voting behavior in seven presidential elections in Nguru local government, Yobe State from 1999 to 2023. Using survey and documentary analysis, the article found that party identification, religion, ethnicity, the personality of candidates and policy preferences were major determinants of voting behavior during the period under study. It is also found out that some of these factors take more prominence than others during different elections under study. Finally, while ethnicity, religion and candidate personality have been major determinants of voting behavior during these presidential elections, policy preferences are now prominent determinants.
