- Abstract
An essay is presented in which the author describes the use of industria, or theatrical spectacle, to promote religious belief in audiences for 16th and 17th century Spanish drama, as well as the relationship between art and ritual in the works of authors Miguel de Cervantes and Lope de Vega. Persuasion, moral ambiguity, and pastoral themes in drama are discussed, as well as Jesuit drama and classical philosophies of performance.
