- Abstract
The Childhood Illness Strategy Integrated Management (AIDPI) can be defined as a simultaneous approach that uses a detailed patient's history. This kind of approach leads to an improved health assistance to detect diseases in children by primary care professionals. The research is aimed to evaluate the nurses' knowledge of primary health care Units in AIDPI in Maranhão state. This is a descriptive and exploratory study with a quantitative approach. In the interviews 35 nurses were included working in family health teams. The data were collected through structured questionnaire and statistically analyzed by the computer program Epi Info® version 7.0, calculating absolute and relative frequencies for each value. According to the results, despite most professionals were trained by the strategy, the knowledge about diseases such as diarrhea and dehydration signs need to be improved to achieve expected care quality. However, skilled nurses (87%) recognized the AIDPI strategy as an important tool in their work routine. Nurses' knowledge on AIDPI strategy was satisfactory. A balance was found between right and wrong answers to questions about childhood illnesses, a mean of 61%. The biggest errors were registered in questions related to assistance to child development, contraindications to vaccination and dehydration signs, 6%, 23% and 29%, respectively. Nevertheless, the theoretical contribution of these professionals to some common situations such as dehydration, child development and their milestones proved to be unsatisfactory.
