- Abstract
Young people as a social group are interested in popular culture (movies, TV shows, and music) where drug trafficking is a central theme. However, the content can impact young people's long-term plans and expectations for their lives, their relationship with these types of cultural output should be seen as more than a passing trend. This is a qualitative research to analyze the meanings that young people in Nayarit, Mexico construct from the narcocorridos and narco TV shows. The presence of both drug trafficking and narcoculture have increased in the area. The results highlight main categories in the meanings that young people construct around narcoculture: Power and money as mechanisms of social recognition, violence as a characteristic of superiority, and the notions of life and death related to the narco world.
