Unentbehrliche Reisebegleiter wie der Baedeker: Eine kleine Kulturgeschichte.
- Authors
Kübler, Hans-Dieter
- Abstract
For nearly 200 years, the Baedeker has asserted itself as a well-known authority and distinctive epitome for the history and practice of travel and tourism: it represents the (bourgeois) culture of travel. The history of its publishers is widely documented by several publications close to the publishing house; but there is hardly any independent academic research. This article attempts to link the history of publishing and the biographies of the publishers with a cultural history of travel and a media analysis in order to gain exemplary clues to the functions and modes of use of travel guides over time. Unfortunately, hardly any empirical data can be found on the sociography of the audience and their use of travel guides, so that the presumed orientation towards and broad acceptance of the Baedeker among older people cannot be substantiated either.
