- Abstract
This article discusses the challenges faced when starting a new emergency medicine residency program and the importance of incorporating residents into the departmental and hospital culture. The program leadership recognized the need for accountability and set clear expectations for the residents, which ultimately led to improved performance and opportunities for success. The article emphasizes the balance between personal well-being and professional accountability, highlighting the importance of time away from work while also acknowledging the interdependence of work-related successes on resident and programmatic wellness. The authors suggest that other programs may benefit from considering this cultural balance.
