- Abstract
In the article "Contra: The Advantage of Free Reading Orders," PD Dr. Stefan Fischer argues against the use of free reading orders in worship services. He emphasizes that the selection of the sermon text should be distinguished from the assignment of reading texts in the worship service. A continuous interpretation of the text, as practiced in synagogue worship, has an educational claim and can increase interest in independent reading of the Bible. However, the selected texts should have a certain length in order to do justice to the literal meaning. The regular reading of Old Testament texts in worship services keeps the Jewish roots of Christianity in mind but must not be assimilated into a Christological context.
