- Abstract
The article discusses the welfare provision of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Finland, focusing on the position of the church between public sector and civil society. Topics include the so-called diaconal work of the church (a term that refers to social services), the impact of cuts to public welfare provision, and social and political involvement of the church in defending the rights of the poor and asylum seekers. Also addressed are the role of religion in a social democratic society, public opinions of Finns regarding welfare provision, and the views of church volunteers regarding such services.
