- Abstract
The coup d'état on the 17th and 18th July 1936 led to a civil war with two contenders fighting, the Franco side and the Republican side. Propaganda was a dialectical weapon to legitimize their own actions and delegitimize those of the opposite contender. At the same time, the Spanish civil war was the origin of modern photojournalism. The newspaper ABC from Madrid was seized by the Republican government a few days after the coup d'état. This newspaper stood out for the importance it attached to graphic elements; with the publication of, above all, photographs as featured means of propaganda.
