- Abstract
Ectopic pregnancy is a potentially fatal condition; its refers to a pregnancy outside the uterine cavity. Approximately 96% of ectopic pregnancy occurs in the uterine tube. There are different forms of treatment, the overall success rate of medical treatment in properly selected women is on average 90%. The surgical approach is the basis of the treatment, but in current practice, some women are candidates for methotrexate therapy (MTX) in individualized and selected cases, due to advances in early diagnosis. MTX inhibits DNA synthesis and cell reproduction, especially in actively proliferative cells. We can conclude from the evaluation of the evidence that in current practice, methotrexate treatment is preferred for suitably selected patients.
