- Abstract
Parasitic infections are among the neglected diseases most prevalent in tropical countries. They mainly affect children because the most contact with the forms of transmission in the environment. The objective was to evaluate two nursery schools in the city of Marialva-PR, using parasitological stool examinations (PSE) and epidemiological questionnaire, in order to establish the relationship between the number of parasited children and socioeconomic conditions. The results of the PSE showed low incidence of parasites in children's nursery A, where only 5% of children were positive for Entamoeba coli. In daycare B, 46% of children were parasited with Giardia lamblia, 10% with E. coli and 4% with Endolimax nana. The results reflect different living conditions between children from two nursery schools, which reflects in better sanitary and hygiene conditions. The higher prevalence of intestinal parasites was related to children who do not have the habit of washing hands before meals and after using the toilet or washing sometimes only, highlighting the need to implement educational measures of hygiene and prevention of parasitic diseases.
