- Abstract
The term syncretism has been used to cover different meanings in some linguistic traditions. It is even possible to find two different interpretations of this term: the first in historical linguistics in which it refers to a formal and functional merger of grammatical forms which were formerly distinguished. The second is mostly found in synchronic linguistic analysis and allows a broader definition of syncretism. This article aims to point out the different interpretations of this notion and the confusion that they can produce in linguistic analysis. I will try to suggest some possible ways to avoid misinterpretations or ambiguity.
