- Title
Reinventing Patriarchy: Washington Irving and the Autoerotics of the American Imaginary.
- Authors
Hurst, C. Michael
- Abstract
A literary criticism is presented of the book "The Sketch-Book of Geoffrey Crayon, Gent. 1820-21" by Washington Irving and edited by Susan Manning. Particular focus is given to the book's portrayal of patriarchy, including its relationship with English national identity and aristocracy. The author contends that the book's intent is to preserve American culture stability, through what is referred to as the autoerotic storytelling of its narrator Geoffrey Crayon.
