- Abstract
The article "From Materials Science" presents various research results from the field of materials science. Leipzig chemists have found that the reactivity of isolated [B12X11] molecules depends on the substituents and is due to a π-backbonding. Scientists from the Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology have developed an electrolyte for a lithium-lead liquid battery that achieves high performance and a current efficiency of 97 percent. A team from the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems has achieved the highest efficiency so far in laser-irradiated GaAs cells by providing the backside of the cell with a reflective surface. Finally, researchers from Jena have shown that the lifespan of Li-metal batteries can be doubled by attaching a thin, two-dimensional carbon membrane to the separator.
