- Abstract
The aim of the study is focussed on investigating the dietary polyphenols and antioxidant potential of Nardostachys jatamansi rhizomes extract (NJRE) and peel extracts of Musa acuminata (red banana) and correlates these findings with specific therapeutic properties. The polyphenolic and phytochemical content of Nardostachys jatamansi rhizomes and peel of Musa acuminata (red banana) extract was evaluated by radical scavenging methods with spectrophotometric and the vasorelaxation study was done on chick embryo model with anti-cholesterol and anti-inflammatory properties. The nutraceutical properties were carried out by estimating the maximum levels of total phenolic (142.1 mg GE/g) for NJRE and (138.3 ± 0.5 mg GE/g) for banana peel extracts. The polyphenols effectively involved in the promotion of anti-inflammatory (79.6%), anti-cholesterol activity (95.35 ± 0.5) with the maximum pancreatic cholesterol esterase inhibition of 98.21% and also enhanced the vasorelaxation by stimulating the smooth muscle in chick embryo (Gallus gallus domesticus). A strong correlation between the polyphenols and therapeutic characteristics of NJRE and banana peel was observed and the polyphenols highlighted a synergism of vasorelaxation. The results from our study will provide a scientific basis for high through put utilization of NJRE and banana peel for the development of nutraceuticals for disease management.
