An essay is presented on the recognition of race by judges in U.S. judicial opinions as of March 2012. The role of judges in promoting racial equality is examined through the concept of racial inversion whereby a judge analyzes the importance of race in each individual case. The role of race in the U.S. Supreme Court discrimination case Ricci v. DeStefano is also addressed.
