- Abstract
This article examines the Bandaranaike statue in Sri Lanka and its role in the 2022 anti-government protests. The statue of former Prime Minister S. W. R. D. Bandaranaike was not damaged during the protests, but protestors found alternative ways to convey their messages. The article delves into the historical and political context of the statue and the diverse responses it elicited. The protests primarily stemmed from economic hardships and grievances against the government, but they also highlighted the deep-seated divisions caused by ethnic and linguistic conflicts in Sri Lankan society. The article also explores the significance of the statue as a representation of the state, a symbol of authority, and a marker of space. The author suggests that over time, the statue's importance may diminish as people's interpretations of its symbolism change.
