- Abstract
The article discusses founding of the Shaker community at Sodus Bay, in Wayne County, New York, focusing particularly on the period between 1825 and 1827 during which the Shakers sought a property, found an abandoned town and purchased it, and established a community which ran from 1826 until 1837. Other topics include Shaker converts from Methodism, brothers Joseph and Richard Pelham, the development of Sodus Bay by the real-estate speculation company known as the Pulteney Estate under the direction of land agent Charles Williamson, and the impact of the War of 1812 on the Sodus Bay area.
