- Abstract
The article discusses the relationship between narrative writings regarding the evolutionary history of the Earth and epic literature of the 19th century. It focuses on the way that epic literary form influenced evolutionary writings through a discussion of topics such as the incorporation of geology as part of British classical education, literary allusions, and the impact that creationism had on Biblical study. Other topics include the cultural aspects of epic poetry, evolutionary theory, and the literary works of authors such as Hugh Miller, James Montgomery, and Dante.
