The article investigates the motives for the employment of alternative investments and its performance considering both prudential and financial performance motivations. Topics discussed include a background on the legal framework that helps determine pension fund asset allocations, justifications for pension funds' allocations to alternatives and the 4 possible motives for increasing use of alternative investments that include alpha, beta and herding.
