News Media in Large Markets Flooded with Applicants, Hire 1% to 5%.
- Authors
Bagley, George; Fedler, Fred; Santana, M. C.
- Abstract
The article examines the problems encountered by experienced journalists when they search for jobs in large markets. In 1982, 18,600 graduates in the U.S. earned bachelor's degree in journalism and mass communication (JMC) and 9,950 found media-related jobs. Among the factors affecting applicants' success in moving to major markets are the number of jobs in those markets, the turnover rate and the economy. Every field has more graduate students that entry level positions, but not every applicant is highly qualified.
