- Abstract
The article outlines a U.S. history lesson concerning how gas and electricity utility companies, along with household appliance manufacturers, sought to increase sales in the early 1900s by associating their goods with gendered expectations for both women and men. The lesson focuses on the expectations about women's domestic roles and men's obligations to purchase up-to-date technologies. The objectives of the lesson are listed. Background information and lesson preparation tips are provided. The article also discusses electric executive Henry L. Doherty.
