- Abstract
Introduction. Vertebro-basilar insufficiency could result in serious intracranial pathological reactions, including vestibular and audiological symptoms. Betahistine seems to be helpful in pharmacological treatment of vertigo resulted from its vasodilatative and neuronal transmission modification effect. Aim. The aim of the study was to estimate the therapeutic effect of betahistine in patients with otoneurological symptoms due to vertebro-basilar insufficiency. Material and methods. Fifty patients aged 40-78 (mean 51.4) were tested. Betaserc was used in the dose 2x24mg a day. Electronystagmography/videonystagmography (ENG/VNG) was performed before treatment and after 1 and 2 months of therapy. Results. Cervical nystagmus, gaze nystagmus and directional preponderance were the most frequent pathological finding that were improved after Betaserc treatment. The ENG/VNG results were better after 2 months of therapy than after are month only. Conclusions. Betaserc in the dose 2x24mg was observed to be effective choice in vertebro-basilar insufficiency treatment, with a significant efficacy achieved after 2 months of treatment. Objective assessment of vestibular system allows for monitoring illness improvement and is useful in indicating the time necessary for the therapy.
