- Abstract
In China's efforts to achieve the "carbon peak and carbon neutrality" goals and build a new energy system, hydrogen utilization exerts unique strengths in the oil and gas industry with respect to geographical distribution, technical readiness and existing infrastructure. In this paper, the technical characteristics of hydrogen utilization and the advantages of the oil and gas industry in hydrogen utilization are summarized. Four typical paths of hydrogen utilization are proposed. Moreover, with the Monte Carlo simulation method, the trends of the four paths are analyzed under different resource conditions from the perspectives of levelized cost and CO2 emission reduction benefits. The results are obtained in five aspects. First, in the blue hydrogen path, the coal-to-hydrogen coupled with carbon capture and storage (CCS) can boost the transition to clean hydrogen production in the oil and gas industry by virtue of its low cost and great carbon mitigation benefits. The green hydrogen path is superior to the blue hydrogen path in CO2 mitigation benefits, so it can be considered as a mid- to long-term option. Second, in gas-rich areas with gas price less than CNY1.38/m³, the natural gas-to-hydrogen coupled with CCS demonstrates good economic efficiency and CO2 mitigation benefits. Third, in oilfields with the annual peak sun hours of more 1 390 hrs. it is economically feasible to supply hydrogen refueling stations with photovoltaic hydrogen production to some extent. Fourth, it is feasible to deploy offshore floating wind-to-hydrogen production + hydrogen blending in natural gas in the oil and gas industry in the areas with favorable wind conditions and annual power generation of over 2 900 hrs. by 2030. Fifth, the economic efficiencies of other paths for hydrogen utilization mainly depend upon technological progress, carbon price and subsidy policies. In conclusion, hydrogen is qualified to be a link between fossil energies and renewable ones, and the hydrogen utilization is conducive to driving the whole energy system to be decarbonized in depth.
