- Abstract
The article discusses medical expertise and political strife within the medical profession of Antwerpen, Belgium from 1860 to 1900 within the context of a closer examination of the influence of the urban environment on public health care provision. Other topics discussed in the article include case studies of health administration in 19th century Paris, France; a national hygienic movement in Belgium, which began in 1860 and became supported by government institutions in 1876; and the implementation of hygiene regulations in Belgian schools.
