- Abstract
The article examines the creation of judges for British subjects during the transition from British to Spanish sovereignty in East Florida by Spanish governor Vicente Manuel Zéspedes in the late 1700s. Topics discussed include the efforts of the governor to meet the legal needs of the residents through proclamations, significance of the legal skill of former chief justice James Hume to inter-imperial constitutional conflicts, and differences between the legal systems of the empires.
