- Abstract
The article explores how Edward Linley Sambourne, an English cartoonist, used photography as a medium, particularly nude photography. It describes the role of photography in the work of Sambourne as a cartoonist for "Punch." It provides an overview of prosecution for photographic images of nudes under the 1857 Obscene Publications Act in Great Britain. It discusses how Sambourne criticized the impact of modern costume on women's bodies in his cartoons called "Robe en Homard" of March 1876 and "No Mistake This Time" of September 1877. It relates the criteria employed by Sambourne in selecting his models for his nude photography.
