The article presents author's view who considers how preservice teachers learn to steer their way through the tensions found in the roiling waters of the English Language Acquisition classroom. Topics discussed include that navigating the tensions surrounding pedagogical beliefs reshaped how he perceive his role as a teacher; and presents studies which show that students engaging in daily independent reading for pleasure score significantly higher on standardized tests.
