This article analyzes the symbolism of hellhound as used in the context of John Milton's poetry. In Book 2 of Milton's poem "Paradise Lost," hellhounds are associated to the character of Sin. As mouths are the crucial feature of hellhounds, Sin's progeny are represented as little more than blind and clamorous mouths. Hellhound's repeated return to Sin's womb is a representation of sin's mode of sterile repetition.
