- Abstract
The article explores depictions of disability and humour in English jestbooks from the 16th and 17th centuries. The author reflects on cultural processes that designate disabled persons as inferior and comic spectacles. Emphasis is given to jokes about blindness and deafness, disability as diminished masculinity, and standards of taste and decency.
