- Abstract
The article discusses the topic of nuclear proliferation and presents different perspectives on the acquisition of nuclear weapons by new countries. One argument against acquiring nuclear weapons is the risk of escalation and potential instability, as every new country with a nuclear weapon increases the chance of someone using it unprovoked. On the other hand, some argue that nuclear weapons can serve as a deterrent against foreign invasion or attack. However, the possession of nuclear weapons can also lead to an increase in low-intensity conflicts and proxy wars. Additionally, the article questions the validity of liberal internationalism and its belief in the progressive movement towards peace. It highlights the contradictions within liberal theory and the undermining of sovereignty norms by universalistic human rights arguments.
