- Abstract
Objective: To determine the degree of adherence to treatment in patients with COPD in Mexico. Methods: Cross-sectional study in patients with COPD in which the association of sociodemographic characteristics, oxygen use, and time with the disease with treatment adherence were analyzed. Descriptive analysis was performed; Chi-square hypothesis tests were used (95 % confidence level). Prevalence ratio, Student t-test for independent samples, and logistic regression were estimated. Results: We studied 362 patients of whom only 25.4 % showed good adherence to treatment. Non-compliance was associated with higher age and lower education of the patients, as well as with a long time of use of anti-disease drugs. Conclusion: It is important to ensure adherence to treatment in patients with COPD by reinforcing communication and empathy of the treating physician, mainly at the first level of care, providing clear information about the importance of adherence to treatment and the correct technique of inhaler use to improve quality of life and prevent possible complications.
