MULTIFAITH: NEW DIRECTIONS.
- Authors
Kunin, David A.
- Abstract
Narratives of religious essentialism, such as the uniting power of the Golden Rule, have shaped multifaith discourse since the beginnings of the movement. While these narratives were a useful first step in initiating conversation, ultimately they blind people from seeing the others as they truly are, rather than as a reflection of themselves. They also served to create artificial barriers of inclusion and exclusion. A different dialectic, based on Talmudic reasoning, is suggested, which moves away from absolutes and essential messages, suggesting a discourse where it is possible to see the other as he or she would want to be seen.
