- Abstract
Aim: Role of fibrin glue on esophageal anastomosis in cases of tracheoesophageal fistula with esophageal atresia in order to reduce the incidence of anastomotic leak. Method and material: Total 26 patients were included in this study. Patients were divided in two group 13 patients in each group. The patients were systemically randomized and were comparable in age, weight, day of presentation and general condition on presentation. Group A consist of 13 patients and in this group esophageal anastomosis was reinforced by fibrin glue. Group B also consist of 13 patients and in this group esophageal anastomosis was not reinforced with fibrin glue (control group). The patients were compared on the basis of mortality, Anastomotic leak, esophageal stricture and wound infection. Result: Total 26 patients were included in this study and they were divided in two groups and were evaluated for mortality, esophageal leak, and esophageal stricture and wound site infection. In group A 2 patients died, Anastomotic leak observed in 1 patients, stricture of esophagus was observed in 3 patients in whom two patients required frequent esophageal dilatation and one recovered well after few dilation. Wound site infection was observed in 4 patients. In group B patients 5 patients died, Anastomotic leak was observed in 4 patients. Stricture of esophagus was seen in two patients and both responded well after few initial esophageal dilatation. Wound site infection was not observed in any patients. Conclusion: Fibrin glue is an effective in securing the esophageal anastomosis in TEF with EA. Even if leaks occur it is usually minor.
