The article discusses how chivalric orders actively engaged in musical patronage from the Middle Ages to the Early Modern Period. The Church developed a liturgical rite for the investiture of a man into knighthood, which was viewed by some as a sacrament. Christian ties with knighthood grew stronger with the emergence of military religious orders. As chivalric orders grew in importance, so was the investiture ceremonies, which have gone elaborate, even solemnized by music.
