The article describes the plant species Torilis (T.) japonica found in Watauga County, North Carolina on August 9, 2009. The collections found are the first records of the taxon from North Carolina as it is more widely introduced into the northern U.S. and Canada. Torilis japonica is sometimes listed as a synonym of T. arvensis and is frequently confused in herbarium collections. The two taxa can be distinguished separately by looking at their fruiting material and flowering specimens.
