Zero risk is not possible in emergency medicine.
- Authors
CAMERON, Peter A.; MITRA, Biswadev; KELLY, Anne-Maree
- Abstract
An editorial is presented on the issue of "zero risk" in emergency medicine and the potential harm it can cause to patients, clinical practice, and the healthcare system. It highlights the conundrum faced by clinicians when seeing a patient with a rare condition that has potentially fatal consequences if missed, such as aortic dissection. It further advocates for common sense, regular optimization of clinical pathways, research to improve diagnostics, and benchmarking of practice.
