Abstract

Initially conceived as a devotional act, the visit ad limina became progressively compulsory, with a flurry of regulatory provisions until Gregory IX; it was Sixtus V who reorganised this institution, giving it a general structural framework and ad hoc regulatory provisions: the latter lasted for several centuries, the former still survive today.
