Probiotics: Bacterial Allies in the Gut.
- Authors
Tompkins, Thomas A.
- Abstract
This article reports that the recent resurgence in the use of probiotics as a mainstream product for health maintenance has been driven by improved awareness on the part of both consumers and health-care providers, improved government regulations, and good scientific documentation. From the standpoint of science, understanding the health opportunities afforded by improvement of the gut flora is currently only the tip of the iceberg of probiotics. Perhaps the most telling example of the breakthrough of probiotics into mainstream healthcare was a recent joint report by an expert panel of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization and World Health Organization.
