- Title
The Path to Monetary Union in Europe.
- Authors
Minford, Patrick
- Abstract
The article presents a discussion on the new proposals for both the European monetary union's long term objectives and its transition's short term methods in response to the renewed debates after the conclusion of the Maastricht Treaty. These mentioned debates are no longer limited to Great Britain but have already reached Germany where the premature disappearance of the Deutschmark was a concern. In France, the concern revolves around the Germany's possible dominance in any European central bank. Moreover, amidst the enthusiasm for monetary union in Italy, there is a concern on the conditions of the Treaty on public deficits and debt which must be met.
